delta punching

Learning to fish the Delta as the weeds seem to never stop growing. I took a customer of GFM out to teach her how to punch the matts. Ceci also wanted to go for a ride in the new nitro Z-9 to see how it rode and fished! We were punching the matts with a 1.5 oz tungsen weight with a punch skirt and a sweetbeaver. The bass were under the matts and hyacinths in a foot of water. Ceci caught the first four bass in places she never would have thought to fish. A couple of times after she set the hook I had to help her pull the bass out of the heavy cover! By mid day she was convinced this was the way to fish for big bass in the middle of summer! She also commented (awesome boat) on how nice the Z-9 rode and how big the front deck was. Ceci borrowed her husbands Powell 766H flipping rod with 65# test braid to get the job done. I think Eric has to go get another rod & reel because Ceci going to keep this set up!

Yes it has been awsome down in the delta. Been catching lots of big bass lately and I've been punching all the time now. Ceci had some problems yanking those big bass out of the cover! And sometimes I can't get them out either!

@Alan, Oooh,... Is that why the 1oz, 1.5oz tungsen weight pegs are empty at the store! LoL. Just givin' ya a hard time. Nice fish!

Ya I had a great day down there Friday with Mark Lassagne. No punchin though (I did not have any weights!) And looking forward to this next week, Wed & Thurs. I have some weights on reserve.

The night before my fishing trip with Alan, I was concerned I’d be unable to “feel” the bite. I quickly learned feeling the bite was the least of my concerns. The biggest challenge was coming up with the muscle power for reeling the large bass from under the massive Delta mats! Of course, all while managing not the break the Powell rod I borrowed from my hubby. After using every ounce of strength I had, and borrowing some from Alan, we managed to have an amazing day…and huge bag.
I now have boat envy; the Nitro Z9 was a kul boat! The compartment space is ample—finally able to bring along everything a gal angler needs—half the closet anticipating every weather change. The side handles are super convenient; I was able to hold while enjoying the smooth ride.
Thanks Alan! I hope your lessons on punching mats helps me in the upcoming Delta tourney with the River City Bassmasters Club in Sac.
